A source told ABC News that Larry Nassar, a former doctor for the USA gymnastics team, was stabbed while he was incarcerated.

According to a source, Nassar was stabbed six times on Sunday afternoon in the back and neck. He has "substantial injuries," according to one source, including what seems to be a collapsed lung.

Two people with knowledge of the matter state that he is in a stable condition.

At the United States Penitentiary Coleman II, a maximum security federal facility in Florida, one inmate was allegedly assaulted on Sunday, but no one else was hurt, according to the Bureau of Prisons. 

officials are reportedly looking into the evidence, including camera footage, to see if anyone else was involved. One suspect, a fellow prisoner, has reportedly been named by officials.

According to a person familiar with the investigation, the staff workers who were watching over Nassar were putting in extra hours. According to the source, the Bureau of Prisons' staffing issues played a role in this.

A source with knowledge of the case claims that Nassar was placed in a unit with other prisoners who had all been found guilty of sexual assault.

For sexually assaulting members of the USA gymnastics team, Nassar was found guilty on both state and federal crimes. His sentences, which total hundreds of years, are being carried out at USP Coleman.
