Google sent an email to employees Wednesday saying the company expected most staffers to return to the office regularly.
Employees at Google Oppose the Three-Day Return-To-Office Order
Employees at Google are protesting the tech giant's requirement that staff members work at least three days a week.
A Google software engineer named Chris Schmidt was quoted as saying, "Overnight, workers' professionalism has been disregarded in favor of ambiguous attendance tracking practices tied to our performance evaluations," in a statement issued by the Alphabet Workers Union, which speaks for some contract and direct workers at Google.
Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., informed staff via email on Wednesday that it anticipated the majority of employees to regularly attend work.
There's no doubt that working together in the same room makes a positive impact, Chief People Officer Fiona Cicconi said in the email, which was seen by Bloomberg. "Not everyone believes in magical hallway conversations,' but there's no question that working together in the same room makes a positive difference," she added. Numerous innovations introduced in May at Google I/O, the tech company's annual developer conference, and at its Google Marketing Live event, according to Cicconi, were "conceived, developed, and built by teams working side by side."
Cicconi stated that teams would begin issuing reminders to employees who are regularly missing from the office, with the exception of exceptional circumstances like the air-quality control notice in Canada and the US East Coast this week. Attendance will now be taken into consideration when evaluating employees' performance, he added. Google will now take new remote requests into consideration by exception.
According to the Alphabet Workers Union, it has more than 1,400 members. At the conclusion of the year, Google employed over 190,000 individuals, including contract workers.
Google had previously intended to reinstate employees' three-day workweeks in April of last year. The business had stated that roughly 20% of employees would be able to work remotely full-time by 2021, during the Covid-19 epidemic.

Alphabet implemented the greatest job cuts in company history in January, eliminating 12,000 employees, or more than 6% of the total. After announcing a plan to spend $7 billion on new buildings and data centres in 2021, the firm also made an effort to minimize its real estate footprint. According to Alphabet's first-quarter financial report from April, it spent $564 million.
According to Ryan Lamont, a Google representative, "Our hybrid approach is designed to incorporate the best of being together in person with the advantages of working from home for part of the week." We are formally incorporating this strategy into all of our workplace policies now that we have been using this manner of working for more than a year.
The Google software engineer Schmidt claimed that a "one size fits all" return-to-office policy disregards employees' personal situations.
"We deserve a voice in establishing clear, transparent, and fair working conditions for all of us," Schmidt said of the policies that have an impact on our lives.
