Mumbai: After a grisly murder was made public on Wednesday, a couple that never interacted with their neighbors and was virtually unknown in their flat block in Mumbai is in the news.

Manoj Sane, 56, first encountered 32-year-old Saraswati Vaidya at the ration store where he worked 15 years ago. They bonded because, according to the authorities, they were both orphans from Ahmednagar. Sane held a diploma from the Industrial Training Institute.

Despite having three sisters, Saraswati, a school dropout, resided in an orphanage. She made the decision to move in with Manoj Sane after they met. She disclosed to family members that he was her maternal uncle and a wealthy man.

Five years ago, they moved into flat block on Mira Road, flat number 704.

They never spoke to anybody else during that period, according to Somesh Srivastava, who lives across the hall and called the police after smelling something fishy coming from Sane's flat. "I didn't even know their name," he said.

When the cops forced entry into the flat on Wednesday, the source of the smell was discovered.

Unprepared for the horror of finding human body parts scattered about the living room and boiling and roasted flesh in cooking utensils, some police officers reportedly puked.

Sunday allegedly saw the murder of Saraswati.

They quarreled, purportedly because Sane thought she was cheating on him. Sane has made radically varying statements to the police.

He initially asserted that Saraswati ingested poison, and died and that he panicked and dismembered her body to get rid of it. In addition, he said Saraswati "was like his daughter".

Police are interrogating Saraswati's sisters.

Unsettling details about what Sane did next are starting to emerge, even if the motivation has not yet been determined.

He is said to have told the police that the Shraddha Walker case gave him the idea to dismember his girlfriend's body with an electric saw that is fueled by diesel. The flat was covered in black trash bags.

He apparently tried to boil and roast the body parts in the hopes that would make them simpler to dispose of but was afraid that the smell would make him obvious.

According to reports, neighbors who suspected a dead rat might be the source of the offensive odor saw him wearing a mask.

Tuesday morning, when the smell was worse, a neighbor complained to Sane in the lift. He allegedly promised to look into it when he got home from work.

After his neighbor Somesh Srivastava knocked on his door and overheard Sane applying a spray, possibly a room freshener, he was ultimately apprehended. The neighbor contacted the police when no one came to the door to answer it. With assistance from his neighbors, Sane attempted to flee after being apprehended by the police in the lift.
