PM Modi unveiled the plaque to commemorate the opening of the eagerly anticipated new Parliament building on Sunday. After doing puja, the Prime Minister also placed the revered "Sengol" next to the Speaker's seat in the Lok Sabha. Before it was placed in the new Parliament building, Adheenams gave Mr Modi the antique 'Sengol'.

The growth of an independent India would be seen in the new edifice, Mr Modi said, adding that India is not just a democracy but also the mother of democracy. In addition, he unveiled a commemorative 75 coin and a unique postage stamp to honour the opening of the new Parliament building.

A customary "puja" with hour-long Vedic ceremonies marked the start of the ceremony. Along with PM Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was present for the puja.

19 Opposition parties, including the Congress, had earlier announced their intention to boycott the new Parliament's opening, claiming that there was no point in erecting a new structure when the "soul of democracy has been sucked out of the Parliament." The four-story building's construction is thought to have cost 970 crore rupees. Tata Projects Limited built the structure after HCP Design, Planning and Management of Ahmedabad designed it.
