After Shikha Rai of the BJP withdrew her nomination, incumbent Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party was elected Delhi Mayor without a contest.
Shikha Rai, a BJP candidate, withdrew her name from consideration on Wednesday, April 26, and Shelly Oberoi, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party, was overwhelmingly chosen as the city's mayor. With this, Oberoi has ensured his reelection to the position of mayor of Delhi.
Rai informed the House that she had withdrawn her nomination because the standing committee election had not taken place.
Incumbent Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of the AAP got another term at the post, as BJP nominee Soni Pal also backed out of the race. The outcome of the mayoral elections was welcomed by the ruling AAP.
"Congratulations Shelly and Aley on again becoming Mayor and Dy Mayor, this time unopposed. Best wishes to both. People have huge expectations from us. Work hard to meet their expectations (sic)," AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet.
Mukesh Goyal, a senior AAP councilor, presided over the mayoral vote. Goyal is the Delhi Municipal Corporation's senior-most councilor.
On February 22, Shelly Oberoi was chosen as the mayor of Delhi after three attempts to conduct the election had been hampered by conflicts between AAP and BJP councilors. Rekha Gupta of the BJP had been beaten by Oberoi by a margin of 34 votes. Out of the 266 votes cast, 116 went to Gupta, while Oberoi earned 150.
The Civic Centre, the MCD's administrative center, hosted the vote. After a fiscal year ends, the city elects a new mayor.
The post of mayor in the national capital sees five single-year terms on a rotational basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the remaining two again for the open category.
