Critics gave the movie generally neutral reviews when it first came out. Saibal Chatterjee, a film critic for NDTV, gave the movie Adipurush a 1.5 out of 5-star rating and stated, "Adipurush, a bloated and vacuous cinematic version of a part of the Ramayana, does the epic or its civilization-defining characters no justice at all."

The Ramayana-inspired film Adipurush, starring Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Sunny Singh as Shesh, and Devdatta Nage as Hanuman, is based on the same story. Saif Ali Khan also appears in the movie as Lankesh, the antagonistic guy. The movie was shown in theatres in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

The movie's initial release date was set for August 11 of the previous year. The actor praised the Adipurush producers for moving the film's release date so it wouldn't conflict with Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha.
