On March 13, people all throughout the world observe Commonwealth Day. On the other hand, it is observed on May 24 in India and a few other nations. The goal of this year's Commonwealth Day, also known as Empire Day, which has the theme "Forging a Sustainable and Peaceful Common Future," is to bring together the 2.5 billion Commonwealth residents in celebration of their shared values and principles and to work towards a common future that is centered on sustainability and peace.

Speaking engagements, exhibitions, and cultural activities are arranged to commemorate the day in all 56 Commonwealth member nations. The goals of Commonwealth Day are to assist one another in enhancing sports, education, employment opportunities, health care, and the environment.

History of Commonwealth Day in 2023

Following the death of Queen Victoria on January 22, 1901, Commonwealth Day was first celebrated in 1902 as a way to memorialize her. On May 24, 1902, the anniversary of Queen Victoria's birth, this commemoration event was first celebrated. However, Empire Day, as it was then named, didn't become a recognized yearly occasion until 1916.

The Empire Day celebrations were expanded beyond national borders in 1916 thanks in large part to Lord Meath, who helped make it become a significant historical occasion. After some time had passed, in 1958, the then-Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Harold Macmillan, declared that Empire Day would now be known as Commonwealth Day in recognition of the changing nature of relations among the group's members.
